PV Sindhu registered her first win at the ongoing Premier Badminton League after defeating Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi 12-10, 11-6, extending Chennai Smashers' lead to 3-0 over Bengaluru Blasters on Tuesday.
Sindhu, currently ranked fifth in the world, previously met World No. 19 Yi at the Hong Kong Open, where she defeated the latter in straight games. Yi showcased her quick moves as she lead 7-4 in the first game after the initial few minutes.
Sindhu, however, seemed confident and composed - fighting back to level at 9-9. She netted a shot soon after, giving a game point to Yi, but saved it with a powerful smash on the right side of the court. Yi felt the pressure and gave away the game after erring on her final return.
In the second game, Yi began well, leading 3-0. Sindhu then displayed her quick reflexes to level scores at 3-3 before taking a lead of 6-4. She made a couple of unforced errors thereafter -- taking the score to 8-6 - but soon compensated for the same by winning three points in succession to win the match.
Yi's shot-making was questionable on more than one occasion throughout the match as she gave away a couple of easy points to Sindhu at crucial moments.
Sindhu's match was chosen as the trump match for Chennai, a win in which gave the team a bonus point.
