Carolina Marin defeated Ashwini Ponnappa 9-11, 11-5, 11-8 to win her trump match, helping Hyderabad Hunters beat Bengaluru Smashers 4-3 at the ongoing Premier Badminton League in Bengaluru on Saturday.
With this win, Hyderabad moved to the third position in the points table -- below Awadhe Warriors and Mumbai Rockets.
Even as Ponnappa -- known for her performances in the doubles events -- won the first game, she failed to sustain her lead. While both committed several unforced errors during the match, Marin powered her way back to win the tie for her team.
Earlier in the mixed doubles match, Marin and Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy lost 9-11, 7-11 to Bengaluru's Ko Sung Hyun and N Sikki Reddy.
In the men's singles event, Sameer Verma produced a dominant performance as he defeated Boonsak Ponsana 11-8, 11-7.
Down by a score of 0-7 in the first game, Boonsak came back winning six points, taking the score to 6-8, but conceded the next three points as Verma took the game. Boonsak, however, had a good start in the second game, as he took an early lead of 4-3. However, Verma came from behind with quick smashes to eventually win the game and the match.
World no. 2 Viktor Axelsen won the trump match for Bengaluru as he recorded a comfortable 11-5, 11-6 win over B Sai Praneeth.
However, the men's doubles pair of Tan Boon and Tan Wee brought Hyderabad back in the game as they won 11-5, 11-8 over Hyun and Yeon Seong.
