SOURCE: Wake Forest is hiring former Minnesota defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel for the same position. A deal was finalized earlier Wednesday. Sawvel served as Minnesota's defensive coordinator in 2016 but was let go along after the team's victory in the Holiday Bowl. He has coached defensive backs at Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois and Ferris State. This is a strong move by Wake Forest, which lost defensive coordinator Mike Elko to Notre Dame last month.

Last month, the ACC fined Virginia Tech and Louisville $25,000 each for their roles in accepting leaked plays from former Wake Forest radio broadcaster Tommy Elrod. That was the maximum fine allowed under league bylaws. Commissioner John Swofford said Sunday he felt the fine was "sufficient. We'll probably have some conversations with our presidents and athletic directors going forward about something you hope you don't have to utilize very often."
