Cal and Purdue have been the two biggest Power 5 surprises, thanks to first-year coaches Justin Wilcox and Jeff Brohm. Each has transformed the unit where he specializes: Cal's defense for Wilcox, Purdue's offense for Brohm. Both teams have Power 5 road victories and could shake things up in their respective leagues next week with home games against USC (Cal) and Michigan (Purdue).

GameDay Final: Is Cal for real?

The Golden Bears aren't winning the Pac-12 and won't be a playoff anything, but Justin Wilcox kicked off his tenure in a shocking way, and Ross Bowers looked great in his debut start at quarterback.

Kyle Bonagura ESPN Staff Writer

What a debut for Cal and first-year coach Justin Wilcox. That the Bears were able to win a game at North Carolina that started at 9:20 a.m PT, far exceeds any external expectations about the program headed into the year. More important: It ooks like Wilcox's defensive background will have an immediate positive impact.
