Cali travel ban won't affect Fresno State-Bama

Fresno State's football game at the University of Alabama this fall is expected to go on as scheduled, despite California's decision to ban travel to Alabama by its state employees.

ESPN Stats and Information

Fresno State (109th in FPI) has the toughest start to the season, according to FPI. While the Bulldogs face FCS opponent Incarnate Word in Week 1, they are on the road at Alabama in Week 2 and at Washington in Week 3. According to FPI, even a top-25 team would have just a 4 percent chance to win all three games.

While Washington State did announce three midterm junior-college signings Wednesday, including No. 11 offensive tackle Robert Valencia of City College of San Francisco, not all of the news was positive. The Cougars lost a commitment from George Moore, the No. 39 player in the ESPN JC 50 and their third highest ranked recruit in the 2017 class. Moore, a three-star offensive tackle out of College of San Mateo, has become a hot target with recruiters lately and now has offers from Arizona State, Oregon State, Fresno State, Missouri, Purdue, San Diego State, Syracuse and Utah State.

Jeff Tedford was always the favorite to land the Fresno State job, but the school also interviewed Oakland Raiders defensive line coach Jethro Franklin for the job, a source said. Franklin played at Fresno State and spent eight seasons as the Bulldogs' defensive line coach at the start of his career.

Champ. Drive: Can Tedford Turn Fresno Around?

Ivan Maisel, Adam Rittenberg and Doug Kezirian discuss the reports that Jeff Tedford will be the next head coach at Fresno State and wonder if he's the right man for the job.

Ted Miller ESPN Senior Writer

Fresno State tapped Jeff Tedford to replace Tim DeRuyter -- as 1st reported by the Fresno Bee -- knowing he's emotionally connected to the school as a former Bulldogs QB and that he knows how to rebuild a program quickly. Tedford, 55, took over a California team that went 1-10 in 2001 and went 7-5 the following season. Almost immediately thereafter, Cal became a Pac-10 and national contender. Things faded over his final four seasons, including a dreary 3-9 mark in 2012, but Tedford's work since then in the NFL, CFL and as an offensive analyst under Washington coach Chris Petersen means he's probably added some new tools to his kit.
