Tennessee coach Butch Jones said his team began preparing for the season opener against Georgia Tech and its unique offense back in the spring. Of those 15 practices, Jones estimates they spent one-third of their time working on the Jackets. He does have some unique insight on his staff -- three assistants recently spent time on ACC Coastal Division staffs.

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said the starting quarterback competition was Matthew Jordan's to lose. Jordan, who injured foot in the spring, will be completely healthy for the start of spring practice next month. But Johnson also expressed confidence in redshirt freshmen Jay Jones and Luke Johnson, saying they "may actually be the most talented kids we've had at Georgia Tech since I've been there at quarterback."

Paul Johnson says the parity narrative about the ACC Coastal division is a bit overblown. Virginia Tech or Georgia Tech has won the division in eight of the 10 years he has been in the league.

Will new star emerge at ACC Kickoff?

Preseason media events rarely provide news, but sometimes it becomes clear a player is headed for greatness, and the ACC again has a few candidates.

Dedrick Mills ran 152 times last season. Just nine of those runs were stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage, a pretty incredible total for a true freshman, and the lowest % by any Power 5 back with 100+ carries. It's easy enough to credit the option offense, but it's worth noting that on all other non-scramble rushes by Georgia Tech, the Jackets averaged 20.8 percent stopped at or behind the line — more than double Mills' rate.

Noles-Tide matchup highlights Week 1 docket

Florida State vs. Alabama, and Michigan at Florida are among the marquee matchups slated to air on the ESPN family of networks during Week 1 of the 2017-18 college football season.

ACC commissioner John Swofford said he expects the revenue gap between his conference and the Big Ten and SEC to close once the ACC Network launches in 2019. "That's why we're doing the channel," Swofford said. "We fully expect a gap with particularly the Big Ten and SEC here for a couple of years but that's the very reason we've signed to do what we're doing. We fully expect that gap will narrow considerably when we get the channel up and running."

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson called changes to the recruiting calendar "crazy" multiple times, pointing out the unintended consequences on current student-athletes. "If you host a recruit while you're in spring practice, you have to have a day off," Johnson said. "You're going to have to come in and lift or do something on that day and you're going to have to take your day off on a Tuesday, when all your other teammates are lifting. So when they find that out, wait a minute I've got to come back on Saturday and lift because this is my day off and it counts when I'm hosting? It's crazy. Who's going to host in June when they get a little break?"
