Jr WC: Goons threaten driver of Japan bus

Hockey India

LUCKNOW -- The driver of a bus carrying Japanese players participating in the junior hockey World Cup here was threatened by some workers belonging to Uttar Pradesh's ruling party on Saturday.

The Samajwadi Party goons stopped the bus and pointed rifles at the driver. They were said to have taken offence at him for overtaking their vehicle. The matter was resolved only after the arrival of the police 20 minutes later.

"The Japanese players and team officials were shocked and looked tense," said an official assisting the team's logistics. "They heaved a sigh of relief after the youths left and the bus started moving again."

The players were returning to their hotel after a match against Spain at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium. The police escort deputed for their security had got separated from the team bus due to heavy traffic.

The FIH brushed aside the issue, terming it a minor traffic problem.
