Maddon: Criticism of Contreras is 'over the top'

One day after calling out his catcher for not running hard out of the batter's box, Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon said the criticism directed toward Willson Contreras is "over the top."

After ranking first in the NL in OPS in the first half, the Cubs are 12th in the second half. It's been a bit of a mystery why some young players haven't continued to grow offensively but Cubs Pres Theo Epstein isn't doing too much analyzing right now. That will come later: “I don't have the answer for that. I don't want to speculate. It's not that time of year. It's the time of year to figure out how to score one more than the opposition.”
