Tigers' Zimmermann bruises jaw when hit by Kipnis' liner

Detroit Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann bruised the right side of his jaw when hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of Cleveland's Jason Kipnis on Wednesday night and left after two batters in the Indians' 5-1 win.

William Weinbaum ESPN

Jordan Zimmermann is the latest pitcher to be hit in the head by a line drive. His injury — a bruised jaw — would not have been prevented by headgear worn (or likely considered) by any MLB pitchers. Several wear carbon-fiber cap inserts, but those offer no protection against shots below the cap line.
