Joe Mattes, who handles licensing for Dale Earnhardt Jr., said no plans had been made for retirement merchandise and he hopes to have merchandise potentially available by July. He said Earnhardt's fans will want merchandise, and the tracks obviously would want to have the opportunity to sell it on race weeends. Mattes: "From a brand, yeah [we were prepared], but not from licensing because Dale's always like, ‘I don't want to talk about it, I want to keep it low, it's not about this right now.' It's about Jr. Nation, but it's not about Dale Jr. putting a t-shirt on."

Kelley Earnhardt Miller, sister and business manager for Dale Earnhardt Jr., didn't have any input on her brother's decision to return to racing this year after sitting out 18 races last season because of a concussion – and she didn't have any input in his decision to make 2017 his last season. Earnhardt Miller: "This sport is all I know. Being on the race track, no matter the dangers, is what I know. I want him to race for as long as he did. When he had his concussion, it was sort of an eye-opener for both of us. I wanted him to get back in the car. I just had it in my mind he could get healthy. I didn't know what he was feeling and going through. We sort of had this come to Jesus one night that was like, ‘Just be my sister.' From that point on, I just knew that this was his decision to make, it was time for me to sort of step back."
