Goerges rallies to secure spot in semifinals in Zhuhai

Julia Goerges saw off Elise Mertens to win a place in the semi-finals at the Hengqin Life WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai on Thursday.

The defending champion broke down in the second set but was able to recover to seal a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory over 22-year-old Mertens.

After losing in three sets to Anett Kontaveit yesterday, Goerges' only way into the final four was to win in two sets against the Belgian No. 1.

Meanwhile, Mertens only needed to win one set to secure her place in the semi-finals in the Rose Group's final round robin match.

The Belgian led 30-15 in the tenth game but despite saving three match points Mertens was unable to win the tiebreak, knocking her out of the running.
