Hell in a Cell preview: Will WWE start to iron out its big issues at Hell in a Cell?

Rusev Day beats The Bar to earn tag team title shot at Hell in a Cell

There were a few common themes on Tuesday night's edition of SmackDown as we head towards Hell in a Cell. There were blindside attacks; Randy Orton went after Jeff Hardy and caused a DQ late in Hardy's match against Shinsuke Nakamura, while Becky Lynch hid in the crowd with a disguise and attacked Charlotte Flair after her win over Sonya Deville. The other theme was marital strife, as AJ Styles and Samoa Joe traded pre-taped promos. Styles reiterated similar points to what he's already said, but Joe took it to an entirely different level with a full-blown children's storybook that ended with Joe stealing Styles' title, wife and kid. Similar tension was present in the night's main event, as The Miz paid for getting physical with Brie Bella and got punched and clotheslined by Bella and Daniel Bryan as Maryse also got involved.

Mick Foley to serve as special guest referee in Reigns-Strowman Hell in a Cell title match

Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose vs. Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler added to Hell in a Cell

Raw had a couple of memorable moments heading into Hell in a Cell, like Roman Reigns putting Braun Strowman through a piece of the stage set with a Samoan Drop, but there wasn't a whole lot of forward momentum during WWE's first broadcast up against Monday Night Football in 2018. Alexa Bliss went after Ronda Rousey's ribs after she and Mickie James lost to Rousey and Natalya, Nikki Bella beat Ruby Riott (handing Riott her first one-on-one loss since March) and Finn Balor defeated Elias. The B-Team failed to regain the Raw tag team titles, Chad Gable and Bobby Roode had some friction in a tag team victory and AOP beat a couple of Grade-A enhancement talent. Even Kevin Owens coming in to try to explain the last few weeks of stories couldn't do much to clarify the direction Raw's heading in. Perhaps Hell in a Cell can be a launching point for some fresh stories on Monday nights.

Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch official for Hell in a Cell

A strange week in the WWE continued on SmackDown, as R-Truth defeated The Miz in the main event. Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella attacked The Miz and Maryse, but ultimately ended the night with Andrade "Cien" Almas and Zelina Vega in matching "Yes" locks. Bryan defeated Almas in a very solid rematch to open the night's action, and Rusev Day defeated SAnitY and The Usos to earn a match against The Bar to determine the new No. 1 contenders for the tag team titles. AJ Styles attacked Samoa Joe and they had to be pulled apart and, rounding out the night, Naomi beat Peyton Royce in a match that lasted just over a minute.

Braun Strowman leads half of Raw roster to destroy The Shield

Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre become Raw tag team champions

The Shield hauled off to jail after melee to open Monday Night Raw

Shawn Michaels was interrupted mid-promo by The Undertaker, and the result was a tremendously powerful moment for HBK -- as well as a massive surprise for the audience. After hearing "one more match" chants for the last 10 years, Michaels talked about how he's turned down millions of dollars to keep from going back on his word. The Undertaker, who defeated Michaels at WrestleMania 26 in a retirement match, claimed it was fear rather than respect keeping him away - and that Super Show Down in Melbourne, Australia will be another in a long line of moments in which he has put down Michaels and Triple H.
