Divisional rankings: Did Ryan Garcia move up after knockout win?

Ryan Garcia, above, rebounded from a KO loss to Gervonta Davis with a KO win over Oscar Duarte on Saturday, but was that enough to move up in the 140 pound division? Carmen Mandato/Getty Images

ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight division will be ranked in that new weight class, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both weight classes.

Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.

Ryan Garcia rebounded from a KO loss to Gervonta Davis in April with a knockout of his own over Oscar Duarte Saturday night in Texas. Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) was ahead on the scorecards at the time of stoppage (69-64, 68-65 and 68-65), but seemed to be hurt several times throughout the fight. Duarte (26-2-1, 21 KOs) was the aggressor for most of the bout and was having a good Round 8 when Garcia, who was being booed by a crowd hoping for more activity, connected with a short left hook to the head that hurt Duarte. After taking knee, Duarte tried to get up, but he was counted out by referee James Green.

It was a win for Garcia, but not the kind of performance he needed to silent the critics. Garcia stays at No. 8 in the junior welterweight rankings.

"I want to become a world champion. I want [WBA junior welterweight champion Rolando "Rolly" Romero] next," said Ryan Garcia after his win. "Everyone kept asking me why Oscar Duarte -- he was so tough! I thought I would get him out in the second or third, but he was like a rock. I felt like me and Derrick have a lot to build on after this fight."

Also on Saturday, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, former WBA interim featherweight titlist Michael Conlan suffered his second TKO defeat in as many fights in a seventh-round stoppage against Jordan Gill. Gill (28-2-1, 9 KOs) was coming off a fourth-round TKO loss to Kiko Martinez, dropped Conlan twice in Round 2. Conlan (18-3, 9 KOs) never recovered and fought valiantly until referee Howard Foster put an end to the fight 1:09 minutes into the round. Gill was ahead on all three scorecards when the fight was stopped (57-56, 57-56 and 57-56). Conlan, who was making his junior lightweight debut, loses his No. 9 spot at featherweight.

Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Ben Baby, Michael Rothstein and Nick Parkinson. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
