Shane Smeltz leaves Sydney FC for Malaysian Super League club Kedah FC

Sydney FC have released New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz from the final year of his A-League contract to sign with Malaysian Super League club Kedah FC.

Smeltz, 34, twice led the A-League in scoring, with previous clubs, and leaves Sydney FC after scoring 12 goals in 43 matches across two seasons.

Smeltz said in a statement on Wednesday: "I have made a decision to take up an opportunity in Malaysia and I look toward to the fresh challenge ... it's something that came about fairly quickly but this is sometimes how it works in football."

Smeltz has scored 24 goals in 51 international appearances for New Zealand, and played at the 2010 World Cup. Before joining Sydney FC, he played for Wellington, the Gold Coast and Perth in the A-League.
