Endurance pays off for Wynyard
ESPN Outdoors Communications — July 10, 2004

MADISON, Wis. — Jason Wynyard of Auckland, New Zealand, took on 16 other lumberjacks in the Men's Endurance competition at the Great Outdoor Games in and is bringing the gold home Down Under.

The Men's Endurance competition in this event is a true head to head competition of lumberjack skills and pure physical strength against every one of the other 16 competitors against the clock.

The first one was the Underhand Chop where the competitor is cutting through a 12 inch diameter log laid vertically with the competitor stand on top of it.

The next event is the Standing Block which is another 12 inch diameter log block is held vertically and the axeman must cut completely through it before going on to the third and final test of using a 6 foot long Buck Saw on a 20 inch diameter log.

Once the full dish has been cut through the saw the clock is stopped and the competition advances. Each competitor will tell you that of all the competitions this one is the most physically demanding and stressful.

This is the fourth gold medal Jason Wynyard has won in this event since the Great Outdoor Games were started five years ago.

When Jason was asked what does he attribute his success for so many gold medals over the years, he uttered, "I love the sport. It's part of me and what makes me the man I am today. You can learn how to chop but if it's not in your blood you'll never understand.

"This is the biggest crowd I have ever seen for a timber sport event. The people are great they cheer ever one of us on as if we were part of their family."

A week ago Jason was bitten by a tick and developed a high fever and some other complications prior to this event. He said: I did my best but I know I did not give it my 100 percent as I could if I felt perfect. But I did give 100 percent of what I had and that's all I could do.

Dion Lane who competed against Jason is also his brother-in-law said that: Jason is a true competitor and he wanted this gold medal real bad. If is truly an amazing person when it come to this sport and I have learned from him every time I watch or compete against him.

The bronze medal was awarded to Arden Cogar Jr., who proudly proclaimed, "This is the first time at the Great Outdoors Game that a medal was won in the timer sports by someone not 6 feet, 4 inches tall! This one is for the short guys!"
