Commentary
Paris Saint-Germain record their joint-biggest margin of victory in the Champions League with a ruthless 6-0 demolition over a toothless Villarreal side. The contest was effectively over after just 17 minutes, with the reigning champions scoring four times in a devastating opening spell. Neves broke the deadlock from a corner before Doue capitalised on a costly error from Gulacsi to double the advantage. Senny Mayulu then added a third less than a minute later, rifling home a bouncing effort that flew into the roof of the net, before Fabian thumped in a fourth to complete a breathtaking start from Luis Enrique's side. The second half was little more than a procession, though PSG still found time for two more goals. Fabian grabbed his second of the evening with a superb first touch and composed finish, before 17-year-old Boly enjoyed a dream Champions League debut, coming off the bench and finding the net less than two minutes later. Villarreal simply had no answers. The Yellow Submarine were cut open at will throughout the evening and finished with just 0.66 xG, while PSG ruthlessly outperformed their own 2.69 xG on the way to making it four wins from four in the league phase. Villarreal will look to bounce back at home to Getafe in LaLiga, while PSG return to Ligue 1 action against Troyes. That's all from us here, until next time – goodbye!
FULL-TIME: VILLARREAL 0-6 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
We're into two minutes of added time at the conclusion of this one.
This one has long since fizzled out, and Villarreal will probably be pleased to have conceded only the two goals after the break.
Looking ahead, Villarreal do at least have a more favourable run of fixtures to come, with matches against Slavia Prague, Sabah and Fenerbahce before a final league-phase showdown with Manchester United in January. Nine points and 11 points were enough to secure a place in the top 24 in the previous two campaigns respectively, meaning the Yellow Submarine should still have a tough, but realistic path to the knockout stages despite this humbling evening.
As things stand, PSG are on course to record their joint-biggest margin of victory in Champions League history. The French champions also thrashed Celtic 7-1 in the competition back in 2017.
