Commentary
An eventful (to say the least) Champions League encounter comes to an end at MHPArena, with Stuttgart held to a 1–1 draw by 10-man Atletico Madrid! The hosts had done enough to take more than a one-goal advantage into half-time, but Stuttgart's failure to finish their chances left the door open for Atleti. The visitors didn't take long to rally in the second half, scoring inside 75 seconds when Lookman squared for Alvarez to curl a clinical finish into the top-right corner, and it was game on once again. Diego Simeone's side produced 0.87 xG and came close to completing their turnaround through Lookman and Barrios, but the task for Atletico became a whole lot harder when Hjulmand was shown a straight red card. The Dane didn't argue with the decision after recklessly scything down Stiller from behind, and after a re-jig of the Rojiblancos' defence, Stuttgart were back on top. With 1.5 xG accumulated from Fuhrich, Promel, El Khannouss and Chabot's near-misses, Oblak kept Promel at bay again late on before Pejcinovic put the hosts' last chance over the bar in stoppage time. Seb Hoeness' side will feel they've left two points on the table as their winning start comes to an end, but the draw does still move Stuttgart up to third in the Champions League table. Atleti's own six-game streak of victories also ends as they fail to make up any ground, staying 15th in the 36-team league phase ahead of hosting Bayern Munich next month.
FULL-TIME: STUTTGART 1–1 ATLETICO MADRID.
OVER!!! One last chance comes and goes for the home side!! Mittelstadt makes space for himself to send another pinpoint delivery into the box, but after breaking off Hancko to rise and head goalwards, an unmarked Pejcinovic can only send his looping effort over the bar and behind!
With Atletico sending long clearances as far as they can whenever they get the ball in their own third, a series of scrappy aerial battles ensue. Sorloth goes up against Chabot in the latest of them on halfway, but clumsily bundles the defender over to gift Stuttgart a free-kick chance.
Stuttgart have won six of their last nine home matches in major European competition, after going nine without a victory immediately prior to this run. After beating Viking 3–1 in their opener at MHPArena this season, Die Schwaben could win consecutive Champions League home matches for the first time since 2003–04.
We're set for just four minutes of second-half added time at MHPArena, with Stuttgart trying to swamp 10-man Atletico as they push for what would be a deserved winner!
