Real Sociedad v Atlético
Atlético Madrid strike late to pull away from Real Sociedad
Three goals in the final six minutes helped Atlético Madrid get back to winning ways at Real Sociedad on Sunday in LaLiga.
After Diego Simeone's men had lost in the Champions League in midweek away to Liverpool and suffered a 3-0 drumming at Athletic Bilbao last Saturday, Atlético were on course to drop more points with this clash in San Sebastian goalless entering the final exchanges.
The crucial moment arrived in the 82nd-minute with Sociedad's Job Ochieng's handball inside the area and after Alejandro Grimaldo scored from 12-yards, Jonathan David and Giuliano Simeone added gloss to the score with late goals in a 3-0 triumph.
Julián Álvarez was a notable absentee from Atlético's travelling squad, but it was quickly confirmed that his absence was fitness related.
It did not impact the visitors initially and they should have scored in the 18th-minute when Lee Kang-In picked out Morten Hjulmand in the area only for the Danish midfielder to head wide.
Simeone resisted the temptation to make changes after a goalless first half, but produced a triple substitution on the hour mark.
With Johnny Cardoso, Koke and David on the pitch, Atlético started to create more chances, but David was denied by Álex Remiro in the Sociedad goal.
As the seconds ticked away, Atlético were handed a lifeline when Ochieng was penalised and Grimaldo rolled home the spot kick.
David made the points safe with a composed finish after Grimaldo's through ball before Simeone sprinted away for a breakaway goal in the dying seconds to wrap up the scoring in a 3-0 victory.
