Betis v Real Madrid
Mbappé misses late penalty as Real Madrid upset by Betis
Kylian Mbappé missed a stoppage-time penalty as Real Madrid suffered their first defeat since the return of coach José Mourinho, with a 1-0 loss at Real Betis on Friday.
The France star looked set to give Madrid a share of the points when he stepped up in the fourth minute of added time after Vinícius Júnior earned a penalty when he was cut down by Natan. But Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles smothered Mbappé's spot kick, adding to his great performance on the night.
Betis stunned Madrid in the 81st minute when newcomer Troy Parrott, an Irish striker, knocked in a ball that Thibaut Courtois did well to save from a header by a Betis teammate.
Madrid also had a potential equalizer ruled out when Carlos Espí's acrobatic finish was denied by a VAR review for offside.
After two trophy-less seasons, Madrid had begun the new campaign with three straight wins following the return of Mourinho, 13 years after his previous spell as coach ended.
But Barcelona will now have the chance to create an early three-point lead over their rivals when they visit Valencia on Sunday.
