Bunny Shaw rescues Man City point against Real Madrid in Champions League

Manchester City needed a Khadija "Bunny" Shaw equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in the Women's Champions League.

Head coach Andree Jeglertz insisted at a press conference on Wednesday that it was business as usual, despite the storm swirling around the club in the wake of them being found guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial rules by an independent commission.

It is not yet clear how the women's team might be affected by any sanctions and a lone chant in support of owner Sheikh Mansour was the only obvious reference to the matter.

City did struggle in the first half at the Joie Stadium and conceded a 29th-minute goal scored by Linda Caicedo, but the ever reliable Shaw came to their rescue six minutes after the break.

City, who drew their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich, had the first big chance of the game in the 10th minute when Shaw was fouled and Mary Fowler headed the free-kick against the underside of the bar.

Real were enjoying most of the possession, though, and forwards Felicia Schröder and Caicedo gave City plenty to worry about, with Ayaka Yamashita twice saving from the former.

The home side relieved some of the pressure with a break from Lauren Hemp that ended with Shaw seeing a header tipped over by Merle Frohms.

But a minute later they were picking the ball out of their own net after Caicedo was allowed to run down the right and into the box, sending a shot across Yamashita and into the far corner.

For much of the rest of the half it appeared a second from Real was more likely than an equaliser, although Yui Hasegawa had a powerful shot headed behind by a defender after being set up by Shaw.

City came out much sharper for the second half and, after Hasegawa had volleyed behind, the Japanese player teed up Shaw for a precise finish into the bottom corner.

Both sides had chances to score a winner, with Caicedo pulling a shot just wide and Yamashita saving smartly from Irune Dorado, while substitute Beth Mead headed just over for City.

There was then controversy in the 89th minute when the referee blew her whistle having inadvertently blocked off Mead just as Silvia Cristóbal found the top corner.

Madrid were furious and continued their protests after the final whistle.
