Warriors v Geylang Intl
Warriors FC beat Geylang for first win in 11 games
Warriors FC recorded their first victory in 11 games in the S.League on Wednesday night after beating Geylang International 2-0 at Choa Chu Kang Stadium.
Nikola Rak handed the hosts the lead after just 58 seconds before adding another right at the death to make sure of the win.
It was certainly a much needed three points for Warriors and their first victory since new coach Razif Onn took over from Jorg Steinebrunner last month.
Inside the opening minute, Warriors got off to a dream start when Jonathan Behe created space for himself with a sharp turn and quick burst of pace inside the box. He cut the ball back for Rak to send a first-time strike in off the near post.
The visitors had a half chance to hit back in the 11th minute when Gabriel Quak beat the offside trap and skipped past Yazid Yasin. But he had made the angle too tight for himself and his shot was saved by the recovering goalkeeper.
Sahil Suhaimi was next to threaten five minutes before the break. His curling free kick called Yazid into action, but, overall, it was a strangely lacklustre display from the usually enterprising Eagles as they failed to carve out any real clear-cut openings.
Sahil wasted another half-chance three minutes after the hour mark when he completely scuffed his shot. Quak had picked him out unmarked inside the area before Yazid did well to smother a dangerous cross from Faritz Hameed in the 74th minute.
As the game entered its closing stages, Geylang began to throw more men forward and that did leave plenty of gaps for their opponents to exploit.
Warriors' Hafiz Nor spurned a golden opportunity to kill off the contest when he was sent racing through by Behe but lost control of possession at the crucial moment.
Then, in the 88th minute, it looked as though the visitors finally found the equaliser. Substitute Shawal Anuar brilliantly brought the ball down on his chest before unleashing a ferocious left-footed shot, only to see Yazid keep it out with an excellent stop.
Straight away, the hosts went on the counter and the ball eventually reached Rak. He calmly made himself a yard of space on the edge of the box before rifling one into the bottom corner. It sealed a long overdue win, finally giving the Warriors' fans something to cheer about.
