Tom Bischof, though, restored the champions' cushion before half-time and Kane then confidently fired in his 36th league goal, striding forwards to the edge of the penalty area, with 20 minutes left.

Bayern substitute Nicolas Jackson added a late fifth in his final appearance of a loan spell from Chelsea.

It did not take long for Bayern to break the deadlock, going ahead after only 10 minutes when 18-year-old winger Lennart Karl floated a cross over from the right and Kane stepped in front of two defenders to sweep the ball from six yards.

Kane struck again just three minutes later when Joshua Kimmich laid off a free-kick at the edge of the penalty arc, with the England captain drilling a low shot through the wall and into the net for his 35th Bundesliga goal this season.

Cologne quickly pulled a goal back in the 18th minute when El Mala won the ball inside his own half before surging forward down the middle and on to the Bayern penalty area before slotting past Manuel Neuer, who has just signed a new 12-month contract.

Bayern restored their two-goal cushion in the 22nd minute when Karl was again the provider as his cutback to the left side of the area was drilled home by Bischof.

Jamal Musiala almost added a third just before half-time after being played in by Kane, but saw his rising left-footed shot hit the post.

Bayern struck the woodwork again early in the second half, when Karl saw his shot from the edge of the Cologne area clip the outside of the post.

Neuer -- having signed fresh terms on Friday, with his previous deal set to expire in the summer -- went off on the hour, replaced by Jonas Urbig, who had come through the youth ranks at Cologne.

With 20 minutes left, Kane chalked up his 11th Bundesliga hat-trick and 36th league goal this season when he picked up the ball before striding on towards the Cologne penalty area then lashing a 22-yard shot into the bottom-left corner.

Jackso, who had only just replaced Leon Goretzka - another set to leave in the summer after eight years, added a fifth in the 83rd minute when he latched onto Raphael Guerreiro's through ball which was Bayern's 122nd league goal of another standout domestic campaign.
