Judge tosses ex-Angels staffer's defamation suit

A defamation lawsuit filed against Major League Baseball and the Angels by Brian Harkins, the longtime clubhouse attendant who was fired for supplying illegal ball-doctoring substances to pitchers, was struck down in Orange County Superior Court.

The Angels remain "very active" in the search for another starting pitcher after signing Jose Quintana, GM Perry Minasian said. They've been linked most prominently to Trevor Bauer and Jake Odorizzi. Minasian also expects a "breakout year" from Shohei Ohtani, who will return as a two-way player. Jose Quintana, Andrew Heaney, Dylan Bundy and Griffin Canning are the other solidified members of the rotation.

Don Sutton said in our 2006 interview, "I consider myself a guy that would've done the right thing, because it was the right thing to do. ‘What do you want me to do, when do you want it done and trust me, I'll give you my best effort.'" As an analyst, he took special interest in Tom Glavine. "His personality and mine are identical and our approach to life and our approach to pitching and preparation: ‘it's my job, let's go do it, I'll give it the best I've got and then I'll take the results.'"

Shohei Ohtani and the Angels are $800,000 apart as they potentially head towards an arbitration hearing. It's a small difference, relatively speaking, but an interesting case that might hinge on how much he's expected to pitch and thus contribute as a two-way player. The Angels submitted at $2.5M, and Ohtani's side countered at $3.3M.

Kurt Suzuki's deal with the Angels (for $1.5 million, as confirmed by ESPN's Jeff Passan) continues a trend of one-year commitments under first-year GM Perry Minasian, following SS Jose Iglesias, CL Raisel Iglesias and LHRP Alex Claudio. Could theoretically open up the opportunity to go big on starting pitching, which they desperately need. Only Anthony Rendon, Mike Trout and Justin Upton are currently signed beyond this year.

Brian Harkins, who was fired as the Angels' clubhouse attendant last March for supplying ball-doctoring substances to pitchers, used a text message from star pitcher Gerrit Cole among his evidence to prove he was unfairly made a scapegoat.

In August 2020, a rookie year baseball card for Angels superstar Mike Trout sold for nearly $4 million. The modern-day card broke a record previously set by a much older rare Honus Wagner card of the early 1900s. And the eye-popping price could be surpassed again soon. Trading cards have transformed into investments, fueled by a mysterious rating system and eccentric power brokers. Dan Hajducky tells us strange stories from the world of sports cards. Then Mike Greenberg shares his thoughts on why the return of baseball meant so much in 2020.

Maddon: Angels' Adell needs more time in minors

Jo Adell, who entered the 2020 season as ESPN's 10th-highest-rated prospect but struggled as a rookie, "no question" needs more time in the minor leagues, Angels manager Joe Maddon said Friday.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Angels manager Joe Maddon said Jo Adell "needs more time in the minor leagues" next season. He might be the best prospect the Angels have had since Mike Trout, but he had a .478 OPS in 132 plate appearances and really struggled reading fly balls.

The Angels have signed LHRP Alex Claudio, 28, to a 1-year, $1.125M contract. Left-handed hitters have batted only .202/.246/.310 against him since 2014,
