Trout scratched from anticipated return to lineup

Shohei Ohtani's bipartite patella is congenital and wasn't an issue until it began to give him apprehension as his bullpen sessions became more intense, Angels GM Billy Eppler said. His 2019 throwing program will essentially be on pause, but will continue in about 10 weeks and will, tentatively, finish in December. From there, the Angels will determine how much time off Ohtani will need before beginning to ready himself to be a starting pitcher in 2020.

Shohei Ohtani's season is over, 17 days early. The Angels announced he will undergo surgery tomorrow to address a bipartite patella in his left knee (which essentially means his knee cap is made up of two bones instead of one). Recovery is typically 8-12 weeks.

Yankees expect Luis Severino to make his first start of the season on Tuesday, September 17 vs. the Angels. Severino, who has been on the IL with right shoulder rotator cuff inflammation and a lat strain, last pitched in the majors in Game 3 of the 2018 ALDS, when he gave up 6 runs in three innings of a 16-1 loss to the Red Sox.
