Oklahoma routs Kansas to advance to Men's College World Series
The Oklahoma Sooners defeated the visiting Kansas Jayhawks 13-2 on Monday in the completion of their weather-delayed NCAA super regional at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, earning a trip to the Men's College World Series.
Oklahoma's offensive performance was powered by four players who hit home runs. Deiten Lachance led the charge, going 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. His two-run shot in the sixth inning was part of a four-run frame that broke the game wide open, a rally that also included a two-run homer from Dasan Harris. The Sooners had already done significant damage with a six-run second inning, which included a two-run single by Lachance and an RBI walk from Camden Johnson. Harris drove in three runs on a 2-for-5 day, while Dayton Tockey and Trey Gambill each contributed solo home runs. Tockey, Gambill, Harris, Brendan Brock and Jason Walk finished with two hits apiece for the Sooners.
With the offense providing overwhelming support, Oklahoma starting pitcher Xander Mercurius went four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six. The bullpen kept the Jayhawks in check, with Nate Smithburg tossing 3⅔ innings of one-run relief.
Kansas struggled to keep pace, managing only four hits. Tyson LeBlanc provided a bright spot, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the eighth inning. The Jayhawks' other run came in the second inning on an RBI single from Jordan Bach that briefly tied the game at 1-1. Starting pitcher Mason Cook was chased after just 1⅓ innings, having allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits. Kansas finishes its season at 45-18.
