Brungard scores 3 rushing TDs and Wyche-El adds 2 in Youngstown State's 47-28 win over South Dakota
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- — Beau Brungard ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns, Lynn Wyche-El scored twice on the ground, and Youngstown State rolled past South Dakota 47-28 on Saturday.
The Penguins (2-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley Football Conference), ranked 11th in the Stats Perform poll, outgained the eighth-ranked Coyotes (3-2, 0-1) 502-332.
Youngstown State scored less than three minutes into the game, as Wyche-El scored his first touchdown from 10 yards out to cap a seven-play, 75-yard opening drive.
Brungard gave the Penguins the lead for good with 7:26 remaining in the first on a 2-yard rush, and Wyche-El tacked on a 41-yard dash to the end zone early in the second quarter.
South Dakota cut the lead to two points in the third on Jackson Proctor's 22-yard touchdown run, but Youngstown State answered with three second-half scoring drives to secure the win.
In addition to his rushing performance, Brungard threw for 159 yards and one touchdown on 13-of-17 passing.
Proctor ran for 36 yards and two touchdowns for the Coyotes, while Austyn Modrzweski was 16-of-22 passing for 147 yards and a score.
Graydon Rollins paced Youngstown State with 17 total tackles and 0.5 sacks. Cam Smith and Darvens Tunis each grabbed interceptions.
South Dakota: hosts Indiana State next Saturday.
Youngstown State: at Southern Illinois next Saturday.
