Champaign's poppin: Illini shock No. 6 Badgers

James McCourt kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired and Illinois pulled off the biggest upset of the college football season, knocking off No. 6 Wisconsin 24-23 on Saturday.

Heather Dinich ESPN Senior Writer

Wisconsin's loss at Illinois was devastating to the Badgers and the entire Big Ten, which could have made a case for two CFP teams if the Badgers' only loss had been to Ohio State. Undefeated Minnesota now leads the West Division, and the Buckeyes are again shouldering the league's CFP hopes.

Wisconsin's first road game since Aug. 30 hasn't gone smoothly, despite an opening touchdown drive and a 210-124 edge in total yards. The Badgers only lead 13-7 at halftime and are fortunate not to be trailing after a penalty wiped out a long Illinois touchdown. Wisconsin needs to get its first-down run game going -- and more long runs in general -- after halftime. Jim Leonhard's defense has had a few uncharacteristic busts but no third-down conversions allowed.
