Panthers right guard John Miller admitted he had COVID-19 last week when he missed the opener and "was down pretty bad for three or four days.'' He watched the 19-14 win over the Jets from bed. He said if he had to face the Saints today he probably would play only half the game. He wouldn't discuss if having COVID changed his stance on the vaccination.

Panthers second year safety Jeremy Chinn laughed and admitted there's some confusion when somebody yells JC on the field because it could be him, middle linebacker Jermaine Carter or cornerback Jaycee Horn. In this case, thought, it's better to have three JC's than none.

Panthers OC Joe Brady says his two seasons (2017-18) with the Saints definitely was instrumental in his career. However, Sunday's game against New Orleans won't be any bigger for him than It was for Sam Darnold facing the Jets in the opener.

The Panthers didn't use the “Keep Pounding'' prompt on the stadium scoreboard on Sunday to fire up fans, and that got a fired-up reaction on social media from fans. A team spokesperson said the team just tried something new, reminding that the “Keep Pounding'' drum still was used prior to kickoff. The prompt will return for Sunday's game against the Saints, but maybe not every game. Fans, according to the spokesperson, are encouraged to shout the chant without being prompted.

Carolina's Christian McCaffrey has a lot of respect for Saints running back Alvin Kamara, who like him is one of the most versatile backs in the NFL. "I love watching him play. He does so many things well. He's a helluva player.''

Getting RG John Miller back could be key for the Panthers against a good New Orleans defense that will bring pressure. On one of the key plays of Sunday's game Miller's replacement, Dennis Daley, whiffed on a spin move by the Jets tackle. Had it not been for Christian McCaffrey stepping in Sam Darnold likely would have been sacked and the 57-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson would not have happened.

Panthers TE Dan Arnold on what Sunday's win over the Jets meant to quarterback Sam Darnold, who spent the last three seasons in New York: "I think Sam definitely wanted this for sure. Even without talking to him directly about it, I think he kind of wanted to prove he's got everything the Jets wanted and they were dumb for getting rid of him.''

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Let's say Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey maintains his pace of 30 touches a game and has 510 for the season. Is that a record? Yep. The most touches in a season is 492 by James Wilder with Tampa Bay in 1984, per ESPN Stats and Info. And that was in 16 games.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Christian McCaffrey proved in the Panthers' 19-14 victory over the Jets that he remains the best do-it-all running back in the league. He had 30 touches for 187 yards, a pace that would have him at a career-best 510 touches over 17 games. Can he keep up that pace? He believes he can.

The Panthers had six sacks in Sunday's 19-14 victory over the Jets with six different players contributing. It took them seven games to get that many sacks last season and they finished 23rd in the NFL with 1.8 sacks per game. Naturally, the defense didn't get much respect coming into the season. Now? "Today, I think we put the league on notice,'' said edge rusher Haason Reddick, who led the way with 1.5 sacks.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Quarterback Sam Darnold said all week it was just another game facing the Jets. What did he say after the Panthers beat his former team 19-14? “I'm not going to lie. Seeing them on the other side, that was a little different for me.''

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey had 30 touches -- 21 rushing, 9 receiving -- today. Over 17 games that would be 510 touches. He had a career career-high 403 touches in 2019. OC Joe Brady said he would take it game to game regards to when to get McCaffrey breaks. He only gave backup Chuba Hubbard two carriers today. Something to watch, but McCaffrey says he can handle it. "Yeah. I'm ready to roll.''
