Arsenal looked to be 90 minutes away from reaching their second successive Women's Champions League final after a 2-1 first leg win in the semifinals, but eight-time record winners OL Lyonnes had other plans.
The north London side lifted the UWCL title last season, beating European heavyweights OL Lyonnes in the semifinal and perennial winners Barcelona in the final, but their title defence came to an end.
Lyonnes got their revenge for last season's semifinal, as they mounted a comeback in the second leg, to come away with a 4-3 aggregate score which saw them clinch a 12th final in the competition.
The Gunners entered this season's quarterfinals through the playoff round, then saw off Chelsea 3-2 across two legs in the quarterfinals.
But their mission to become the first English side to reach back-to-back European finals came to a heartbreaking end.

Standout performer: Alessia Russo
Alessia Russo is the top scorer in the competition this year with nine goals, after she netted Arsenal's only goal in the second leg of the semifinals. No English player has ever scored more in a single season of the competition.
The England international was an integral part of the Gunners' frontline, with her work off the ball as important as her goalscoring nous.
She was a central figure in Arsenal's UWCL triumph last season, scoring seven goals and assisting two in 11 matches.
Her brace led the comeback against Real Madrid in the quarterfinals, and she got on the scoresheet in the semifinal second leg against OL Lyonnes too.
Following a summer in which she won the Euros with England, Russo finished third in the Ballon d'Or rankings last year.
