Meet the Indian weightlifters

A little more than a month ago, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (48kg category) discreetly scripted history. Breaching a 12-year-old national record set by Kunjarani Devi, Chanu lifted 85kg in the snatch and 107kg in the clean and jerk, bettering the old record for total lift by 2kg to earn an Olympic spot.

Sathish Sivalingam (77kg category), who caught attention by setting a new Commonwealth Games record with a lift of 149kg in the snatch in 2014, will be the only other Indian weightlifter in the fray.

Competition in Rio will, however, undoubtedly prove to be stiff with China, who finished with five gold medals in weightlifting at the London Olympics, set to turn up with a full strength of 10 lifters in a bid to extend its dominance. But a podium finish for India cannot be wholly ruled out.
