BEC Tero Sasana scored two second-half goals to edge out Buriram United 2-0 in the Thailand League Cup final at the Supachalasai Stadium on Sunday night, claiming their first major trophy in 12 years.
The Fire Dragons, led by Thailand's Asian Games star Chanathip Songkrasin were the dominant force throughout the final. But they had to wait until the 75th minute to break down a stubborn Buriram United FC defence through Japanese defender Daiki Iwamasa before Honduran forward Georgie Welcome slotted home the second in the dying minutes to give BEC a deserved victory.
Buriram, who were in search of their fourth consecutive League Cup title, looked slightly jaded and had goalkeeper Siwarak Terdsungnern to thank as he singlehandedly kept his team in the game with some superb saves from Radomir Djalovic and Naruebodin Weerawatnodom.
BEC captain Rangsan Viwatchaichok lifted the trophjy at the end of the game to send the fans into raptures while Chanathip received the most valuable player award to cap a wonderful night for the Bangkok-based giants.
The Thai League Cup was founded in 1987, but re-formed in 2010 in a different format. Buriram were playing in their fifth successive consecutive final, having won the last three.
