Although the final score of Paris Saint-Germain's 3-0 win over Metz looks relatively convincing, Les Parisiens made a meal of it and could have won by more if Edinson Cavani had not been so wasteful in front of the goal.
Positives
Once again, Layvin Kurzawa was extremely impressive. The France international scored but also got forward regularly and created a number of chances. The 23-year-old's strong start to life under Unai Emery continues.
Adrien Rabiot was another PSG player who caught the eye. The France under-21 international looked composed in midfield and will have already given Emery a few good reasons not to immediately drop him for Marco Verratti, Blaise Matuidi or Grzegorz Krychowiak.
Another of the capital club's youth academy products, Presnel Kimpembe, stood out. The young Frenchman was a rock at the heart of the hosts' defence with another mature performance.
Negatives
Cavani's first outing of the season was unforgivably poor. Nothing went right for the Uruguayan international and although he is still getting back to full fitness after his recent thigh injury, he missed some relatively easy chances and quickly looked devoid of any sort of confidence. Emery has a job on his hands.
David Luiz, although not disastrous on the same scale as Cavani, was unconvincing alongside Kimpembe. Captain Thiago Silva's and Marquinhos' returns to action cannot come quickly enough.
Manager rating out of 10
6 -- Emery's Parc des Princes debut went reasonably smoothly, but better will be expected of his team in the future, particularly in front of goal.
Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Kevin Trapp, 8 -- Preferred to Alphonse Areola between the sticks once again, the German shot-stopper barely put a foot wrong. With the exception of a misjudged bounce in the second half, which nearly led to a Metz goal, the 26-year-old was impressive and made a number of good saves.
DF Serge Aurier, 6 -- Apart from being booked unnecessarily in the first half, it was a solid display from the Ivory Coast international. The 23-year-old's confidence is returning after a disastrous second half of last season.
DF David Luiz, 5 -- Upstaged by his younger central defensive partner, Kimpembe. For a player who is not guaranteed a starting role once Silva and Marquinhos are available, Luiz's concentration should not wander as much as it does. That said, a first-half shoulder injury -- which required heavy strapping after the final whistle -- did not aid his showing.
DF Presnel Kimpembe, 7 -- It was another very encouraging performance from the 21-year-old, who continues to grow in stature and confidence by taking few risks.
DF Layvin Kurzawa, 7 -- The Frenchman's excellent start to the season is showing no signs of slowing down. The former AS Monaco man has scored three goals and assisted one in three matches so far this term and has benefitted from Emery's arrival more than any of his teammates.
MF Adrien Rabiot, 8 -- The 21-year-old took the opportunity to stake his early claims for a place in Emery's strongest starting XI with a strong all-round 71-minute performance. The youngster getting stuck in as much as he did complemented some neat touches and intelligent passes.
MF Thiago Motta, 6 -- Although he did not do much wrong, bar a few wayward passes, Rabiot was by far the more dominant midfielder.
MF Lucas Moura, 5 -- Apart from a powerful finish for the opening goal, the Brazilian contributed little and continues to struggle to show his best under Emery in these early days.
MF Javier Pastore, 6 -- The Argentina international is enjoying his deployment in his preferred No. 10 role, and although he was not involved as much as compatriot Angel Di Maria, "El Flaco" was one of PSG's most creative influences on the night.
MF Angel Di Maria, 7 -- "El Fideo" should have scored with a second-half effort that was blocked on the line but he was still Les Parisiens' most consistent attacking threat throughout the match.
FW Edinson Cavani, 1 -- Catastrophic. The footballing equivalent of turning up for a school exam and getting a single mark for spelling your name right and nothing else.
Substitutes
MF Marco Verratti, 6 -- Sent on for Lucas after 65 minutes, to the delight of the Parc des Princes crowd. The Italy international continues to get closer to match fitness and looked sharp enough to be in contention to start in Monaco next week.
MF Blaise Matuidi, NR -- Introduced after 71 minutes in place of Rabiot, the France international brought his usual energy and fight.
MF Hatem Ben Arfa, NR -- The former Nice man's PSG home debut came from the bench and only lasted 11 minutes, which was not enough time for him to get into the match.
