McLaren boss Ron Dennis has given his team five out of ten for its performance this season, but is already confident it will make a step forward in 2017.
After struggling in 2015 when Honda arrived as its new engine supplier, McLaren has made steady progress up the grid this season. The team currently sits a distant sixth in the constructors' championship with 62 points from 17 races, and its mid-table position appears to have affected Dennis rating out of ten.
"About a five," he was quoted by Sky Sports. "We're just not good enough. We are here to win races and we're not winning races -- but we are going in the right direction."
Although the Honda is still down on power compared to its rivals, the Japanese manufacturer has made clear progress in its second year. Dennis is confident next year's engine and chassis are both more advanced than the current car was 12 months ago.
"Our new engine is running on the dyno now and that's several months earlier than our engine last year. We are well advanced on the car and making really good steps. As everyone will have been telling you, the cars will be four, maybe five to six seconds faster, and I think that's when the great drivers will start to excel."
