Kimi Antonelli has made Formula 1 history by becoming the youngest world champion in the sport's history, adding to a remarkable list of achievements in just his second season.

The Mercedes driver had already broken records for the youngest driver to lead a grand prix, secure pole position and set a fastest lap before claiming his maiden championship.

Here's a look at the records Antonelli has broken, the historic milestones he's reached and those still within his grasp.

The records broken

Youngest world champion

The 20-year-old has won the world championship and has become the youngest driver of all time to do so -- and by quite some way.

He has now broken the record held by Sebastian Vettel, who won his first title with Red Bull in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days old.

Antonelli has now done so at the tender age of 20 years, 68 days old on Sunday.

Most wins by an Italian in a single season

The great Alberto Ascari had six wins in a single season back in 1952, but Antonelli broke this after sealing his seventh victory at the Italian Grand Prix.

Similarly, Ascari also holds the record for the most wins by an Italian over his F1 career with 13 -- something Antonelli is well on his way towards already.

Most wins in the season of a driver's first F1 victory

Antonelli earned his first victory in Formula 1 in 2026 and has now got the most wins in the same season as that first victory.

He has nine wins which is already five more than any other driver has had in the year of their first victory in F1 history.

Six drivers are tied on four wins in the same circumstances, Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Eddie Irvine, Jacques Villeneuve, Ronnie Peterson and Graham Hill.

The historic milestones

Third Italian driver to win F1 title after a 73-year wait

This is one Italian fans have been waiting patiently for. Despite him driving for Mercedes and not Ferrari, this will mean a great deal.

Antonelli is now the third Italian driver to win an F1 title after Giuseppe 'Nino' Farina won the inaugural title with Alfa Romeo in 1950, and Ascari won back-to-back championships for Ferrari in 1952 and 1953.

First champion since 2009 to have a winless previous season

Antonelli didn't win any races last year and as a result, has become the first driver to win the title after going winless the previous season since Brit Jenson Button back in 2009.

The youngster was on the podium three times in 2025, but never on the top step. This season he has won nine races and has stood on the podium 16 times.

Fifth driver to win the title in his first or second F1 season

Antonelli has joined a list of iconic names and has become the fifth driver to win the title in his first or second season since joining Formula 1.

The last driver to do it was Hamilton in 2008 when he won the title in his second season. Villeneuve and Juan Manuel Fangio also won it in their second season in 1997 and 1951, while Farina won F1's inaugural championship in 1950.

First champion since 1982 to enter season without a career victory

Antonelli has become the first driver to win the championship after entering the season with no career wins since 1982.

He is the first to do so since Keke Rosberg clinched the title in the United States at the Caesars Palace Grand Prix.

Antonelli took his maiden victory at the Chinese Grand Prix back in March.

Six-place improvement from previous championship position

Antonelli had an up and down season in his rookie season at Mercedes and finished seventh in the title standings. With him being crowned champion, he's now joint-third for the largest turnaround by a title winner by six places.

He's tied third with Jody Scheckter in 1979 and Hill in 1968. Button has the record for his title win with Brawn, when he finished 17 places higher than the previous season.

Records that could still be broken

Largest championship margin for driver to win first F1 title

This could be a wildly impressive record for the youngster. He has already won the title and could end up doing so by the largest margin -- he's currently 119 points clear of Max Verstappen.

Nigel Mansell, who won his first title in 1992 was 52 points clear, while Villeneuve in third won his first in 1997, 39 points adrift from the runner-up. Those admittedly were using different points systems.

Most wins in a maiden championship season

Antonelli has stood on the top step of the podium nine times this season and could be well on his way to finish with the most wins in a driver's maiden championship-winning season.

Verstappen won his first title in 2021 and he came away with 10 victories that season. Antonelli is currently on nine victories with four races remaining.

Most poles in year of first career pole

He's also within reach of securing the most pole positions in the same year that he took his first pole. After taking pole at the United States GP, he's on seven.

Antonelli will need one more to match James Hunt's 1976 tally and two more poles to equal Niki Lauda's record in 1974 and Ronnie Peterson's set a year earlier.
