Betting Blog: The latest tips ahead of the Capital One Cup

After the weekend's results in England, who would be a football tipster? (Don't answer that question!) An incredible set of results rendered reasoning and logic irrelevant but we have to get back to basics this week as some of those beaten sides prepare for tricky ties in the Capital One Cup.

The temptation, of course, is to look for underdogs to upset those Premier League teams who may be out of form or focusing more on other competitions and therefore fielding under-strength sides. But it's not necessarily that simple, since those "out of form" teams may suddenly realise that the Capital One Cup could be a competition they can succeed in.

The safe(ish) bet

Liverpool will rest some of their key players against Middlesbrough and having lost three games out of five in the league, it could be argued that they are ripe for the taking. But three things make me think Liverpool will bounce back on Tuesday. One, the players who will come in are hungry to make an impression; two, they are at home and three, manager Brendan Rodgers has described it as a massive game.

Middlesbrough have won their last three league games but there has to be a chance that Bet365 have under-priced Liverpool. Now I am not suggesting taking them at 4/9 but I expect them to start fast this time and the even money on them leading at half-time and winning at full time looks generous.

The value bet

Cardiff got rid of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in midweek and immediately showed some encouraging form as they drew at a decent Derby side last weekend. The caretaker pairing of Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young have a lot to prove but also a lot to gain and the visit of Bournemouth on Tuesday looks the perfect opportunity for them to get their first win.

This looks the classic case of Cardiff, a side better than the sacking of Solskjaer suggests, being over-priced to beat a Bournemouth side who sit level on points with them in the Championship and whose only away win in the league came on the opening day of the season. Bet365's early price of 9/5 has been replaced by one of 33/20 but that still looks far too big, so take the home win.

Treble chance

Newcastle United showed a lot of spirit to come back from 2-0 down to draw with Hull at the weekend but I can see them struggling at Crystal Palace. It's not so easy to show that kind of mental strength away from home and Palace are on a high having just won at Everton. Palace look a massive price at 8/5.

MK Dons stunned Manchester United earlier in the competition and have made a great start to the season. They should be good enough at home to see off fellow League One side Bradford, at 5/6.

Finally, Arsenal even if they rest a few key players have the strength in depth and class to beat Southampton, who may just be tempted to rest some of their first-choice players themselves. The Gunners are 5/6 with Bet365 to win at the Emirates and if we put those three together, we get a treble that works out at 15/2.
