USA prop Mike MacDonald was today appointed as captain of Leeds Carnegie for their forthcoming 2008-09 National One season. The club's longest serving player Rob Rawlinson, was also revealed as club captain.
MacDonald, 27, who last year was named Leeds Carnegie's Player of the Season, has made 50 appearances for the team since he joined from Worcester Warriors in 2006 and takes over as captain from Stuart Hooper, who left the club at the end of the season.
The Californian born prop is the side's most capped player, having represented USA Eagles on 50 occasions. He made his USA debut against Fiji in 2000 and was an ever present for his country in their 2007 World Cup Campaign.
MacDonald said: "Any time you captain a side it means a lot to you, so it will be a great honour to captain Leeds Carnegie during this forthcoming season.
"To take over from Stuart Hooper, who did a fantastic job for the club, is a privilege and I am looking forward to the challenge of this new role.
"There are so many leaders throughout the team, which makes my job easier, and although I will be making the decisions on the field I know the rest of the players will be a massive support to me."
Speaking on the appointment Leeds Carnegie's Director of Rugby Andy Key said: "Mike's international career is impressive, he's played at the highest level of the game and his experience will hold him in good stead for the role of captain.
"As a player he is well respected by his peers and I know he is looking forward to the challenge the season brings, as are the rest of the players.
"Strong leaders are an important factor for any team and, as Mike has stated, it won't just be him who is required to show leadership skills. Like a good captain of a ship, Mike will need to draw those qualities from those around him if the team is to be successful."
Commenting on Rawlinson's role Key said: "When looking to appoint a club captain both Neil and I felt Rob Rawlinson was the ideal candidate for this role.
"Rob has spent many years with Leeds and he is not only respected by the players and staff but he also has huge affinity with all things connected to the club. He will provide Mike with great support and will be able to take some of the pressures from him over the season in regards to some of the off field duties."
